After taking Derek Barnett with the 11th pick, the Saints focus on the back end of their defense with the final selection in the first round. General manager Mickey Loomis should have a bevy of options here, with the cornerbacks being deeper than any other position group in the class. Tre’Davious White has the upper hand here for a few reasons, chief among them being his proximity to the franchise. After starring at LSU, it would be borderline impossible for New Orleans to miss even the smallest highlight.
White was excellent for the Tigers, playing top-notch football in the SEC. He would be a significant upgrade opposite Delvin Breaux, who needs help in the league’s worst pass defense from 2016. New Orleans plays in a winnable division and could make noise in the postseason with its elite offense, but the defense has to be much better than seen in the winter. With Barnett and White coming into the fold, the Saints could continue taking defensive talent in the second round or attempt at giving Drew Brees another weapon to utilize.
