Jose Altuve and Teoscar Hernandez of the Astros had to leave tonight’s game after a collision in the outfield.

Houston Astros’ second baseman Jose Altuve and outfielder Teoscar Hernandez left Tuesday night’s game against the Cleveland Indians after a scary outfield collision. Altuve appeared to hit his head in the collision, although Hernandez evidently got the worst of it. The collision can be seen here:

Hernandez, who had just been called up from the minors, had to be carted off. He appeared to awkwardly twist his knee in the collision. Altuve was able to walk off under his own power, but did look a bit dazed in the aftermath..

Hernandez came into the game as a defensive replacement for Carlos Beltran. George Springer, who is nursing a hamstring injury, came in to play right field for Hernandez. Marwin Gonzalez came in to relieve Altuve.

Altuve, of course, is regarded as one of the game’s best all-around players. He and shortstop Carlos Correa make up perhaps the best middle infield in the majors. Altuve is off to another great start in 2017, .324/.393/.459 and AL-best seven stolen bases.

Hernandez made his Major League debut last year with Houston and appeared in 41 games. He hit .230/.304/.420 with four homers and 11 RBIs in 100 at-bats in 2016. Tuesday was Hernandez’s first Major League game of the 2017 season.

In a fine display of sportsmanship, Cleveland voiced its support for Altuve and Hernandez on Twitter:

The Astros are tied with the Colorado Rockies for the best record in baseball at 14-6, thanks in large part to their deep lineup that features rising stars Altuve, Correa, Springer, and Alex Bregman. However, a long-term injury to Altuve would be brutal for Houston.

In addition to being one of the league’s best pure hitters, Altuve is also a huge threat on the basepaths. He’s been at or near the top of the American League in both hits and steals the past several seasons.
