29. Rogers Centre

  • Year Opened: 1989
  • Capacity: 49,282
  • Defining Features: Skydome hotel, Views from the 6ix

The Rogers Centre, previously known as the Skydome, is everything that was right about the excess of the 1980s. Put a hotel in a baseball stadium? Sure, why not! Build a stadium to hold 50,000 in a country that is only just getting into baseball? Sure, why not! Astroturf? Of course!

If you can get past the fact that the stadium become dark and dingy when the roof is closed or that the concourses are outdated, the Rogers Centre is a very striking stadium in which to watch a baseball game. Sitting in the upper deck gives impressive views of the city and the CN Tower on a nice day. Say what you will about domed structures, there is no denying the fact that the Rogers Centre dome is quite a sight to behold when it is open to the sky.

The entire complex is very interesting, with the CN Tower looming in the background. Cool lake breezes float in during the summer, making it very pleasant to watch a baseball game with a light sweatshirt. It may be time for the city of Toronto to consider a new stadium, but during its heyday, the Rogers Centre was the place to be in Toronto during the summer. It is still an impressive structure, but it has aged out of modern trends. With an upswing in fan interest in Toronto, right now may be the time to strike and get to work on a new ballpark.
