Houston Texans select Deshaun Watson
With the 12th-overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Houston Texans selected Deshaun Watson out of the University of Clemson.
There was plenty of talk leading up to the draft about whether Watson would be able to succeed at the NFL level. When you turn on the tape, he has the ability to make big plays both down the field and along the sidelines, but there is a noticeable lack of velocity at times. If there is one concern about Watson, it’s that.
However, the former Clemson star has all of the other measurables. At 221 pounds, Watson should be able to handle an NFL pounding. Perhaps more importantly, he can avoid much of the direct hits with his mobility, something akin to a player like Alex Smith. Watson is going to be a passer first and foremost, but his legs will gain additional first downs.

Ultimately, Watson is a winner who was able to navigate one of the best college defenses we have seen this century. He was brilliant in consecutive years with the game on the line, including a fantastic finish that ended in Clemson’s first title since 1981.

It wouldn’t be wise to start Watson in 2017, but he has the look of an excellent prospect who could develop into a top-tier passer down the line. While this class is not strong at the quarterback position, an argument can be made for Watson as its best.
