Kansas City Chiefs select Patrick Mahomes
With the 10th-overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs selected Patrick Mahomes out of the University of Texas Tech.
Of any player in the draft, Mahomes might have gotten the most help over the last few months. Originally, Mahomes was considered a second-day pick, but his arm strength and interviews have shot him up the board, landing him in the first.
Mahomes needs to sit for a year, as he desperately needs to revamp some of his mechanics. The aforementioned arm strength is off the charts, but his footwork is deplorable. However, it is fixable, and shouldn’t be a concern moving forward provided he gets the right coaching. This is potentially a home run pick.

At Texas Tech, Mahomes was able to beat out both Baker Mayfield and Davis Webb for the tarting job, getting both to transfer elsewhere. The gunslinger threw for 5,052 yards and 41 touchdowns against 10 interceptions as a junior. This came in the Air Raid system, so the numbers are more impressive than most, but it’s his film that has people excited.

At 225 pounds, Mahomes has ideal size, albeit an inch or two shorter than some prefer. If he can retrain his feet and ignore the wild throw downfield for the occasional intelligent checkdown, he should be the best quarterback in this class. While there is a risk of bust here, he also has the highest ceiling of his contemporaries. All of the talent is there for a star.
Mahomes will sit behind Alex Smith for a year with the Kansas City Chiefs, but then take over for a team ready to win the Super Bowl.
