NFL Draft Rumors: Browns taking Myles Garrett No. 1 overall
The Cleveland Browns may be selecting defensive end Myles Garrett after all in the 2017 NFL Draft.
On Thursday night, the first day of the 2017 NFL Draft will get underway with Round 1. This will see the Cleveland Browns lead off with the No. 1 overall pick. They could select highly-regarded players like Mitchell Trubisky, Jamal Adams, Solomon Thomas and others. Trading down is also an option, which happened with the first selection in the 2016 draft.
Well, it seems the Browns may have already made up their mind on who will go with the first selection. According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, they will take defensive end Myles Garrett out of Texas A&M. It was also added that the Browns’ “top brass” met about Thursday’s draft plans, which had them knowing “for a while” that Garrett would be going to them.
Garrett has been viewed as one of the best defensive players in the 2017 NFL Draft since the year began. He would be the pick over Trubisky, who could have helped the quarterback-needy Browns. However, they do have the No. 12 overall pick, so that leaves the door open for him going to Cleveland, too.
If this report comes to fruition, Garrett would be the first defensive lineman to go No. 1 overall since 2014. This saw the Houston Texans select Jadeveon Clowney. Prior to that, the Texans took Mario Williams in the 2006 NFL Draft. Defensive end is the only non-offensive position to go with the top pick since 1994.
Of course, this could be a smokescreen for the Browns to pick someone else. This has happened before, but not often with the No. 1 pick.
