With the sixth pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the New York Jets selected Jamal Adams out of the University of LSU.
Along with Ohio State’s Malik Hooker, Adams is the most complete safety in the draft. If there is a comparison for Adams, it is Eric Berry of the Kansas City Chiefs. Adams, much like Berry, has terrific instincts, showcased throughout his tenure in the SEC.
If Adams lives up to his abilities, he will be a cornerstone for years to come. With elite speed and size, there are no obvious weaknesses for a player that was the best player on one of college football’s best defenses throughout the 2016 season.
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 214
40-time: 4.56
Bench: 18 reps
Vertical: 31.5”
Broad: 120”
3-cone: 6.96
As evidenced above, the combine was a showcase for Adams, who dominated in most drills. In most years, Adams would have been the first defensive back off the board without question, but was unsure of his draft situation simply because of the most loaded class at his position since 2010.
The Associated Press All-America should make an immediate impact, jumping into the starting lineup from day one. Provided Adams stays healthy and keeps his nose clean (no evidence either will be an issue), this is the kind of selection that a team can build off for years down the road.

New York made the right pick. Adams is going to start from day one for a team that needs to completely rebuild the secondary. Marshon Lattimore had to be on the lips of general manager Mike Maccagnon, but he was wise to think of Adams and make the move.
