With the 14th-overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles selected Derek Barnett out of the University of Tennessee.

Barnett was one of the fastest-rising players throughout the draft process. While most were focused on Myles Garrett at the edge post (and for good reason), Barnett was always going to be a steal in the middle-to-late portion of the first round.

Playing at Tennessee, Barnett got to go against some of the best talent college had to offer. Despite that, he was able to dominate with 12 sacks. He started as a freshman in 2014, making him a three-year starter in the SEC. In his time with the Volunteers, he racked up 32 sacks, showing that he has both consistency and top-end talent.

Combine measurements

Height: 6’3”
Weight: 259
40-time: 4.88
Bench: N/A
Vertical: 31”
Broad: 117”
3-cone: 6.96

At the combine, Barnett looked the part of an outside linebacker in the 3-4, but his 40-time will give some concern. Typically, you would like to see a time in the high 4.6 range, making his 4.88 a red flag. Still, if Barnett is able to rush the passer anywhere near as well as he did in college, that 40-time will be a distant memory.

Look for Barnett to be an immediate contributor, coming onto the field in passing situations and then working his way into run downs. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Barnett produce as a rookie, especially as the year continues on.

The Philadelphia Eagles released defensive end Connor Barwin this offseason, so look for them to have high expectations from the jump. Barnett should be seeing ample playing time as a rookie, especially in pass downs.
