NBA Playoffs 2017: Wizards advance, fans react on Twitter
By John Buhler
The Washington Wizards won Game 6 of their first-round series over the Atlanta Hawks to advance to the second round. Here is how Twitter handled that.
While the first five games of this best-of-seven first-round series were close, the Washington Wizards throttled the Atlanta Hawks on the road in Game 6 115-99 to beat Atlanta 4-2 to move on to the Eastern Conference Semifinals. There they will meet the emerging rival Boston Celtics, the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed.
Atlanta and Washington are Southeast Division rivals, so these two teams don’t really like each other all that much. Tensions were high in this series. The starting point guards, John Wall and Dennis Schroder, got into it in Games 1 and 2. Power forwards Markieff Morris and Paul Millsap were at each other’s throat all series.
Even former buddies with the Orlando Magic in Dwight Howard and Marcin Gortat weren’t on the best of terms. This is the sort of thing that happens when divisional foes play each other 10 times in an NBA calendar year.
Overall, this was one of the better, more competitive series of the first round of the 2017 NBA Playoffs. Look for the inherent animosity between these two clubs to continue into next year. Washington should still be a viable threat to go deep in the Eastern Conference Playoffs. Atlanta could look different next year, but will find a way to make the playoffs. The Hawks have done so 10 years in a row now.
Twitter had a few things to say about this series coming to an end. So here you go…
Let’s just say Twitter is in a weird spot with the outcome of this Wizards vs. Hawks game. There’s a lot of overconfidence on the Washington side and a lot of well shucks on the Atlanta side. It was an exhausting series and it took a lot out of us.

Washington will have its work cut out for it against Boston in the next round. Atlanta will turn its focus to the upcoming NBA Draft. Congratulations, Washington. Better luck next year, Atlanta.
