The 2017 NHL Draft Lottery will be held on Saturday April 29. Here’s how you can watch a live stream of it.

It’s funny how fast a year can change things. Roughly 365 days ago, the Toronto Maple Leafs officially won the 2016 NHL Draft lottery. Fast forward one year and they made the playoffs, led by the first overall pick Auston Matthews. The 2017 NHL Draft lottery will be held on Saturday April 29 at 8:00 p.m. ET.

Going into the event, the Colorado Avalanche have the best odds of winning it at 18 percent. They had the worst regular season record in the league and one of the worst in recent memory. The Vancouver Canucks have a 12 percent chance of winning it while the Arizona Coyotes and Vegas Golden Knights are the only other teams with double digits in their chances of winning, each with a 10.3 percent chance.

Here’s how the lottery will work. Each team is assigned a certain number of a quartet of digits. 14 ping-pong balls, each with a number from one to 14, are put in a machine. At random, four balls are picked. Whichever team has the winning combination has the first overall pick. After that, each ping pong ball is put back in the machine and two more draws are made. This determines the second and third overall picks. A redraw is done if a team that has already won gets one of their combinations selected. The rest of the order is determined by the standings in reverse order, from worst to best.

The projected top pick this year is Nolan Patrick. While he’s not at the same level as Matthews and Connor McDavid, he has everything it takes to be a franchise center. That’s something each team in the lottery could use.
