Isaiah Thomas lost a tooth to the sharp elbows of Otto Porter, then proceeded to hit back-to-back 3-pointers.
Isaiah Thomas has become famous for his ear-to-ear grins, but things may look a little differently now. The Washington Wizards blitzed the Boston Celtics early in the first quarter of their Game 1 matchup. As Thomas trailed Porter around an off-ball screen, an inadvertent elbow from Porter knocked his tooth loose. Porter drilled the jumper which put the Wizards up 22-5.
In video shown on the ABC broadcast, you could actually see Isaiah’s tooth flying through the air (it’s the white spot just to the left of Porter’s hip in the photo below). If you’re squeamish at all, this might be a good time to go find something else to read.
Despite the injury, which one would assume is fairly painful, Thomas had a few smiles left in him.
Over the next two minutes of play after losing the tooth, Thomas came back and hit back-to-back 3-pointers to help close the gap and keep his team in the game. The Celtics finished the first quarter down 38-24. Thomas had 12 points and 2 assists, after drilling all three of his 3-point attempts. Boston dropped their first two games at home in the first round and had to dig themselves out of an enormous hole to advance to this matchup.
