MLB power rankings: 30 best baseball uniforms of all time
11. 1917 Chicago White Sox (Home)
The throwback phenomenon we enjoy several times during the major league season today began in 1990, when the Chicago White Sox hosted “Turn Back the Clock” day at Comiskey Field. The uniforms the team chose were from 1917, which at the time was the last World Series title-winning season in Chicago history. Fans of the movie Field of Dreams would also recognize the look.
There was some concern in breaking out a new version of the old uniforms, especially during an era when teams primarily wore one uniform at home and one on the road. A few days before the teams took the field, the Chicago Sun-Times interviewed Rob Gallas, the marketing vice president that oversaw the event:
"“Everyone said the uniforms wouldn’t fly, but when we went to Major League Baseball they said, `Sounds like fun. Go ahead,’ ” Gallas said. “Then we approached (manager) Jeff (Torborg) and Pudge and Ozzie (team captains Carlton Fisk and Ozzie Guillen) and they said great. “But the thing to remember is we’re not trying to be historically correct. The uniforms aren’t made of the old flannel-wool material and they aren’t as baggy as they were because we said we don’t want to get in the way of the game. It’s more a nostalgia thing. We said, `Let’s have fun and do things that remind people it’s the last year of the old park.’ “"
The uniforms looked great, and remain one of the best in history. Other teams jumped on the retro uniform bandwagon in the coming years, and the idea is used commonly today. The White Sox helped spur a movement seven decades later that remains a fun part of the game.
