8. New York Mets (Home)

The New Yorks Mets have very good uniforms today, and the traditional home pinstripes are one of the top 10 looks in baseball. However, the club is one of the many that got its uniforms right the first time, then strayed through the 1980s, ‘90s and 2000s before coming back to the original, classic look born along with the team in 1962.

Choosing an interlocking NY cap logo made perfect sense for the Mets. After all, the Yankees have used an interlocking NY for the vast majority of their existence, as did the New York Giants before they moved to San Francisco. Even at the risk of being called a crosstown copycat, choosing to wear pinstripes at home was also a strong decision. Blue and orange is a strong color combination, though limiting the use of orange helped keep everything in balance.

It was such a strong start that the Mets wore practically the same uniform for 30 years. Unfortunately, the franchise began tinkering with the home uniform in the early 1990s, first adding a tail to the script “Mets” in 1993, then adding a drop shadow and using black as a third team color in 1998. The team added a snow white home uniform, the ventured to a vintage cream option in 2010 before going back to the original in 2015.

On a side note, it’s a very small thing, but the only real improvement the team could make to its traditional home pinstripe uniforms is to wear blue cleats. Admittedly, that’s a departure from the 1962 standard, when like all teams the Mets wore black cleats. But as a matter of personal opinion, blue would be an improvement.
