The women’s finale of the Red Hook Criterium in Brooklyn, one of the biggest crashes you’ll ever see wrecked this marquee cycling race.

It’s springtime across the United States of America. The weather is starting to improve in most parts of the country. For many cities, it is time for cycling criterium to be in bloom. A criterium is a high-speed, closed-circuit race that usually takes place over one day. One of the better-known criteriums in the country is the Red Hook Criterium in Brooklyn.

These events are usually of the 500 meter to 1,000-meter variety. Cycling fanatics and people who just like hanging outside get to watch these ultra-competitive closed circuit races. For those in attendance at the Red Hook Criterium, they got more than their money’s worth in the women’s finale.

Cyclists are crammed in this closed-circuit race. Should one rider fall, it can lead to a massive pile up with so many cyclists racing as fast as possible. Unfortunately, one rider took a tumble in the middle of the pack. Shortly thereafter, a couple of dozen cyclists would also hit the pavement.

Because this massive cycling wreck happened early in the women’s finale, all the riders were able to get up and continue to race. It, fortunately, happened on a straight away. Had this wreck occurred on a curve, it might have been even more catastrophic.

Just imagine coming around a bend at full speed on a bike and then see dozens of your competitors sprawled all along the pavement. At that high-speed, it would be almost unnavigable to get around a multi-biker crash on a curve.

American Colleen Giluck would go on to win the women’s finale. It was a big win for her, but everybody on the internet is going to look up this massive crash that happened during the Red Hook Criterium. Car crashes to bike crashes, human beings just can’t look away.
