In tonight’s midseason premiere of Lucifer, “Candy Morningstar,” Lucifer returns to Los Angeles to find things are not as they seem.

Charlotte chastises her date for walking out on her. She says her son left her and she hasn’t heard from him in two weeks. Her date leaves and Charlotte has to face Maze, who says Lucifer hates being manipulated. She thinks Lucifer is plotting his revenge.

As it turns out, Lucifer is meeting with some shady guys. He hands over a bag of money and gets the item he wanted.

Chloe tells Dan she still hasn’t heard from Lucifer after two weeks. Dan knows she’s upset that he left and she says she’s over it. Ella says she misses Lucifer because he was a good hugger. Turns out no one has heard from him. Chloe looks at the body of Ash Corrigan across the street from the Whiskey Go Go. Chloe realizes he was in a band, so they go find the bandmates. The band is upset that they were starting to get hot and now they’ll have to start over. They tell Chloe and Dan that he was in a funk since the divorce. Courtney, his ex, is very passionate and violent.

At the station, Dan tells Chloe that Courtney was violent toward his ex. That’s when Lucifer shows up. Chloe is happy to see him at first, but then she gets mad for leaving her. He has news, and then he’s interrupted when a leggy blonde comes running down the stairs. She wants to show his police friends how generous he is, and she shows off her shiny diamond ring. “Meet Candy Morningstar,” he says. “My wife.”

Lucifer didn’t want to announce his marriage to exotic dancer Candy, but that doesn’t make it any easier for Chloe. Lucifer says he had family issues that required him to blow off some steam in Las Vegas. Chloe doesn’t care, but she thought she and Lucifer were friends, and that’s what Lucifer says they were. Dan interrupts to say he has Ash’s ex-wife in for interrogation. Candy wonders if they like her, and Lucifer gives her a halfhearted answer.

Chloe wants to know what Courtney does that would give her such a bad rap with the band. She says Ash was childish and didn’t understand that you have to work. Lucifer joins Dan to watch the discussion. Courtney says that Ash took everything from her in the divorce. Chloe wonders where the money went, and Courtney thinks it was the mediator.

Amenadiel tracks down Lucifer on Candy’s social media account. They’re celebrating their wedding, which means they got married. Amenadiel wonders why Lucifer wanted him to watch over Chloe if he was going to go marry someone like Candy.

Dan says Courtney’s alibi checks out and the mediator is clean. Candy stands with them while they talk and she spots the guy they’re looking for in the murder scene photo. Chloe informs Lucifer that they aren’t partners anymore. She tells him that he let her down, and they can’t be partners if she can’t rely on him.

Dr. Linda meets with Lucifer and says that she hasn’t seen him in awhile, not since he went to hell. Lucifer says she can be open with Candy there. They don’t have any secrets. Candy says Lucifer is a “thinker” because he thinks everything through. Linda asks about his relationship with Chloe, and Lucifer says he avoided that problem because his father set that all up. That’s why he has Candy now. Linda questions his decision to return if he doesn’t care about Chloe, and it would seem he missed his “work.”

Dan checks in with Chloe, and when he gets off the phone, Lucifer comes out from behind a tree and wants to know how to get back in her good graces. He suggests to Chloe that he and Candy go undercover with the lawyer. While they talk, Maze checks Candy out and definitely approves of her. Chloe sends them away as Lucifer tells her how to find him on “Wobble.”

When Lucifer returns to his apartment, he finds his mother waiting. Candy thinks Charlotte is Lucifer’s sister, but Lucifer clears it up. He didn’t invite Charlotte to the wedding because they didn’t want any enemies. Charlotte decides to take Candy shopping to learn more about her.

Maze wants to know what Chloe thinks of Candy. Maze says Candy’s bra size equals her IQ, which is generous. Maze notes that Chloe is mad about Candy, but Maze says that Lucifer always comes back around. Chloe says that she is done with him. She won’t let him near her case, and Maze suggests that perhaps she and Lucifer need a mediator. That gives Chloe an idea. She shows up at the meeting dressed as Candy with Lucifer. She reveals that their partnership needs work, but it has only been five days. She uses the time to bash Lucifer in a situation where he can’t back away. The mediator asks Lucifer for his side, and he says he went through hell. Chloe says she’s the one who almost died, and he says that’s the problem.

Outside, the mediator asks Chloe if she’s okay. She asks him if he’s willing to do some extra negotiation to get Lucifer’s money. Lucifer pops in and they blow the cover, but they are able to talk to the mediator, who says he’d never hurt Ash. When Lucifer asks what he desires, he says he wanted Ash’s band to be successful. He got the money so the band could achieve its dreams. He worked for free and Ash promised to make him the manager. Together, they had a scheme to make them stars, but he was at the crime scene to see how a business deal went down. He didn’t kill Ash. Seeing Ash dead was “the day the music died.” With that new information, Chloe sends Lucifer home.

Candy compares her ring to the ones in the window. She says the size of the ring means he loves her a lot. Charlotte wonders if they’re planning to kill her, but Candy says the plans are to open a juice bar and tanning salon. Charlotte has no idea what she’s talking about, but Candy assures her that she has Lucifer’s back.

Later, Charlotte tells Amenadiel that Candy is her biggest nemesis. She couldn’t get anything out of her. Amenadiel says that it could be part of Lucifer’s plan, that this is all real and is what he wants. Charlotte says that would mean she broke him by pushing him too hard.

Dan, Chloe and Ella discuss the case with the lead from the mediator. Marla is a definite suspect. Ella thinks Chloe and Lucifer are working things out, but Chloe assures her that isn’t the case. Ella looks at the album and thinks the marks on Ash’s head could be from Marla’s base guitar. Chloe heads to the club, but Lucifer beats her to it. He shows up on stage as the opening act.

Lucifer greets the crowd and dedicates the song to “a woman who says she doesn’t need” him anymore. The song he’s going to sing is a 90s jam, because he knows Chloe loves 90s music. He starts singing (it’s amazing, of course) and he locks eyes with Chloe as he sings. Then he says he’s there looking for Marla, who tries to flee. When they find her, he says Chloe needs him.

Back at the station, the guitar has Ash’s blood on it. Ella feels the tension between Lucifer and Chloe and is relieved when Amenadiel shows up. Amenadiel wants to know why Lucifer had him protecting Chloe while he was gone if he was only going to run off and marry Candy. Lucifer sees Chloe as his father’s pawn. Amenadiel says that Chloe doesn’t know her feelings aren’t real, and Lucifer points out that he was protecting her from being used. Amenadiel sees what he’s trying to do. He tells Lucifer that he should explain this to their mom, because she died for him, too. They all care about him, so what more does he need?

Dan admits that he told Lucifer where Chloe was, and he tells her that it’s because Lucifer saved her life. Marla says she didn’t kill Ash, but she thought they were going to bust her for fake IDs. Marla suggests that they look for a guy named Hunter who followed her around. On his social media site, they see the drummer, Doug, who had the bass last. Dan says Chloe should go with Lucifer to check it out. Inside Doug’s apartment, Candy calls Lucifer and he takes the calls. That’s when he gets choked from behind.

Doug has Lucifer and Chloe has her gun on him. Doug says Ash was going to go solo and leave them. Lucifer says he doesn’t mean anything to her, and eventually she shoots Doug, narrowly missing Lucifer.

Candy shows up, frantic about Lucifer. She says she wanted Lucifer to quit, but he loves his work too much. She tells Chloe that she was the reason he was so upset, because he almost lost her. Now Chloe knows that Lucifer really did care, and she tells him not to be late for work the next day.

Lucifer goes to his mother’s office and says that he doesn’t forgive her, but he knows she did go to Hell for him. He’s more upset with his father anyway, so it doesn’t matter. Charlotte says she appreciates that Lucifer was honest with her, so now she needs to be honest, too. She wanted to get their family back to the Silver City. She reveals that the Flaming Sword was Azrael’s blade and they could still go home.

Outside, Lucifer thanks Candy for playing a great role. She thanks him for saving his life back in Vegas and he tells her to keep the rings. He hugs her and thanks her for helping him. Before she leaves, she wants to know what was going on with Chloe. She sees something there and he shouldn’t mess it up. As she drives off, he says he’s trying not to mess it up.
