1. Bartolo Colon

At last, we arrive at the player most likely to wear a Mets uniform at some point this season, Bartolo Colon. Big Sexy became a fan favorite over the last three years in New York. In his forties, Colon has continued to stay healthy, getting by with an assortment of fastballs, great movement, and pinpoint control.

Colon left the Mets to sign with the Atlanta Braves last winter, seeking an opportunity to spend the full season in the starting rotation. With Zack Wheeler, Matt Harvey, and Jacob deGrom all fully healthy, there was no room for Colon in the Mets rotation this year. With Syndergaard now out for what could become two or three months, Robert Gsellman struggling, and Seth Lugo out for the year, the Mets suddenly find themselves needing a veteran  hurler like Colon to come in and eat innings every fifth day.

Making a trade for Colon would serve a few purposes for the Mets. For starters, he would eat up Syndergaard’s innings for the foreseeable future while helping the Mets avoid another debacle where Harvey was forced to pitch on short rest the day after a hard lift. Adding Colon back to the fold would also open up the possibility that the Mets could trade Harvey or another of their starters in an effort to recoup some value on their starting pitching core before they all get injured or hit free agency.

Finally, bringing Big Sexy back would serve as catnip to the angry masses of Mets fans who have already given up on this year’s team and are ready to forget about baseball for the rest of 2017.
