Former Portland Trail Blazers and Washington Huskies point guard Brandon Roy was shot as an innocent bystander in Los Angeles over the weekend.
Though he only played part of six NBA seasons in his brief professional career, there was no denying how talented of a point guard Brandon Roy was coming out of the University of Washington.
He was the sixth overall pick by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2006 NBA Draft before being traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. Roy would win 2006-07 Rookie of the Year, make three trips to the NBA All-Star Game and two All-NBA teams before having to retire after the 2010-11 NBA season due to knee injuries.
His career with Portland was brief, but brilliant. Roy has successfully pivoted into being a high school basketball coach in Seattle for Nathan Hale High School. Things have been looking up for Roy, at least until a scary incident that happened in Los Angeles over the weekend.
According to local NBC affiliate out of Seattle KING 5, Roy “was shot while at an outdoor gathering in the Los Angeles area…Roy was an innocent bystander in what may be a gang related shooting.”
KING 5 also reports that Roy received treatment for his injury in Los Angeles, but has since gone back to his native Washington while he recovers. Roy declined to comment on the incident, but that seems obvious given on what went down.

From the looks of it, it seems that Roy was clearly in the wrong place at the wrong time. Certainly more information will come out, but it doesn’t appear that Roy was the target in the gang-related shooting. It is in Roy and the Los Angeles Police Department’s best interest to stay quiet until they can get all the facts. Here is to a speedy recovery for Roy up in his native Seattle.
