Stars and Scrubs

Dustin Johnson
Webb Simpson
Kevin Tway
Shane Lowry
Brian Harman
Stewart Cink

If your preference is to go with the stars and scrubs approach, you’re going to put Johnson in the lineup given the insane level of play he’s capable of – and despite an insane price to take him. However, there are enough players being undervalued for the Wells Fargo that you can still construct a nice lineup.

Super High, Super Low, Heavy Middle

Dustin Johnson
Daniel Berger
Hudson Swafford
J.T. Poston
Kevin Tway
Julian Etulain

Taking the highest salary and the absolute lowest salary here, you can construct an interesting lineup with how the middle of it is filled. These players all have very nice chances of performing very well. This could be a nice lineup, but the key would be getting any kind of performance from the $6,000 man in Etulain.

The Okay Fine, No Dustin Johnson

Jon Rahm
Lucas Glover
Kevin Kisner
J.B. Holmes
Martin Laird
Brian Gay

Considering that he’s a full $2,000 more expensive than the next highest player, it makes sense as to why you’d want to stay away from Johnson. That and the fact that everyone will have him in their lineup because he’s worth that price. Thus, this lineup drops down to Rahm and contains a lot more balance and great potential for low overall scores given recent play and situation.

Ultimately, there’s just too much value to be had to have Johnson in the ideal lineup. Every reason why he should be makes sense, but it’s too much money for men and, especially in tournaments, I’m going against the urge as Rahm might be just as good right now and at better value. Thus, there are some solid high-end and mid-tier options and then the reliable Cink in there. The key to this lineups success might be Tway, but count me a believer.
