Floyd Mayweather posts stacks of cash on social media, allegedly after winning a bet he placed on the Boston Celtics during the second game of their NBA Playoffs series.
Floyd Mayweather took to Instagram Wednesday to post a photo with stacks of cash sitting on his lap. Mayweather appeared to be sitting on an airplane while looking out of the window. He didn’t express exactly how much he won, but let’s just say if the amount he was flaunting in the photo was from his win, it was a lot.
Mayweather doesn’t hide his passion for betting on sports. We pundits have been writing about Mayweather’s betting exploits going back four years when the Grand Rapids native had purportedly won or lost $3 million on Michigan to cover as a 14-point underdog against Alabama. The jury is still out on what the exact scenario surrounding that particular bet was.
The point is that Mayweather hasn’t been shy to post betting tickets claiming he has significant wagers riding on different sporting events. Mostly college and NBA basketball in addition to college football and pro football.

In January, Mayweather told ESPN, “Well, I’m one of the biggest sportsbook bettors in Las Vegas. So with that being said, they gave me my own room with TVs. It’s the TMT room. And then also in VIP in the sportsbook is only for The Money Team. We’re the only ones who can sit there.”
We’re not here to judge Mayweather’s betting on sports. We are also not here to insinuate that Mayweather could run out of money. That would be nearly impossible considering he has earned more than $700 million during his Hall of Fame boxing career. To make the assumption that he could ever be financially insolvent would be insane, right?
It’s more about the psychology as to why Floyd Mayweather has the need to post these “wins” on social media. What is there to prove, and more importantly, to whom? Especially considering that most of the comments he receives are visceral responses when these types of photos are posted.
Photos on social media like today’s post could lend credence to a rumor made by UFC champion Michael Bisping that Mayweather is trying to earn back the money he was allegedly scammed out of. Those reports were in reference to why Mayweather is so eager to make the Conor McGregor fight. The real underlying questioN — and most important — is why does Floyd Mayweather continue to bet large sums of money on sporting events when those tens of million-dollar paydays aren’t rolling in anymore?
Living in Las Vegas doesn’t help either. The ability to scratch that itch is way too convenient. The good news is that Mayweather has been busy with his promotional company and is eyeing a potential mega event with UFC champ Conor McGregor. Look, if Mayweather is betting on sports at the rate in which he expresses and with the amounts he alleges, then statistics are not in his favor. According to the video posted by the experts at fiftyfourpercent.com, 98 percent of the people that bet on sports, lose. Although you only have to win 54 percent of the time to be profitable, it’s a full-time job in itself.
For Mayweather’s sake, let’s hope he can act responsibly with his longtime hobby.
