Orioles pitcher Gausman ejected for throwing at Red Sox’s Bogaerts as series takes turn for worst.

Baltimore Orioles pitcher Kevin Gausman was ejected on Wednesday night for hitting Red Sox shortstop Xander Bogaerts. Gausman’s curveball nailed Bogaerts in the back in the second inning at Fenway Park.

The home-plate umpire wasted no time throwing the Orioles’ starter out of the game early to send a message to both teams.

Catcher Caleb Joseph immediately sprung up to defend his pitcher as Bogaerts trotted to first. Orioles manager Buck Showalter rushed out of the dugout to plead his case, but the umpires wanted no part of it. The AL East rivals have had easily the most heated series of the year thus far.

Gausman’s throwing at Bogaerts, whether intentional or accidental, adds fuel to the fire. Red Sox pitchers attempted to peg Manny Machado after a nasty slide into second. Matt Barnes was ejected for throwing at Machado’s head later that night.

Tensions grew after game one of the series when Orioles outfielder Adam Jones took to the media and exposed the atmosphere at Fenway Park. Jones claimed fans threw objects at him from the stands and directed racial slurs at him.

But that’s only the beginning.

In game two, warnings were issued to both sides as Chris Sale threw behind Machado once again. According to Ken Rosenthal, Sale could be suspended in the near future.

Next: Sale likely to be suspended for throwing at Machado

Reports at ESPN say that  MLB held a conference call with both organizations on the subject and threatened to take further action if the two sides continued. The two sides got along for just one inning before things got nasty between the teams once again.

Gausman’s punishment (if any) has yet to be named. However, it’s hard to imagine that MLB will just let this one slide.
