Always Dreaming entered the 2017 Kentucky Derby as one of the co-favorites and absolutely looked the part. Watch him win the race at Churchill Downs.

Unpredictability is always the name of the game in horse racing and the 2017 Kentucky Derby. Post position, the conditions and just the general mood of the horse can all play a factor in how the race plays out. However, that was even more so the case when it comes to the 2017 race on Saturday, May 6 at Churchill Downs.

With rain muddying the track all through the end of the week, it was interesting to see how everything would play out. Everyone was predicting that it would be an unpredictable race, more so than normal. But when the bell sounded, what predictions were made didn’t matter.

It was State of Honor — a huge longshot — that jumped out to the early lead in the 2017 Kentucky Derby. However, it was a favorite in Always Dreaming staying right on his tail throughout. Meanwhile, another favorite in Irish War Cry stayed within striking distance throughout. Coming around the far turn, though, it was Always Dreaming taking the lead.

But as they entered the final stretch, Always Dreaming had many challengers trying to come on. But as Classic Empire and everyone tried to make that late run, the co-favorite entering the race had another gear. On the inside rail throughout the race, it was almost too easy for him to pull away for a dominant win.

For a race that was supposed to be unpredictable and thrilling, it was fun obviously. However, there wasn’t a whole lot of drama. A great horse that was considered one of the favorites dominating in such a manner was impressive, but not wholly exciting. Still, we’ll now see if he can compete for the Triple Crown.
