Live results and highlights of the much-anticipated battle on Saturday night between Canelo Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
We are accustomed to seeing some amazing boxing matchups every Cinco de Mayo weekend, but few have been more anticipated than the one weāre going to be treated to on Saturday night. In a battle for Mexican pride, Canelo Alvarez (48-1-1, 34 KOs) will step into the ring to battle Julio Cesar Chavez Jr (50-2-1, 32 KOs).
There is a lot of intrigue surrounding this bout, for a few reasons. Of course, as previously mentioned, these are two Mexican warriors who will be battling to call themselves the best the country has to offer. Mexico prides itself heavily on boxing, so having the distinction of calling yourself its best fighting product means more than just about anything in your career.
Then thereās the backgrounds of the two fighters. Canelo has always been viewed as the warrior who had to scratch and claw his way to the top, while Chavez is looked upon as the fighter who was born with the silver spoon in his mouth and furthers his career simply based off the popularity of his legendary father. To say these two dislike one another would be quite the understatement.
Finally, thereās the fact that this fight is being contested at a catch-weight of 164.5 pounds. Canelo generally loves to live in the area of 155, which has made a potential super fight with Gennady āGGGā Golovkin hard to make happen. GGG is adamant that a fight for the middleweight title should take place at the true middleweight limit of 160 pounds, and with Canelo proving on Saturday that heās more than willing to make the move up now, the dream bout could be in the cards should Alvarez come away with the win in this battle of Mexican pride.

Round 1
After the ring introductions, itās time. The two fighters come out to square up right in the center of the ring. Canelo immediately throws and lands a right hand to the body of Chavez. He follows that up shortly after with two jabs to the head. Chavez throws a hard hook, but Canelo gets right back on the offensive. Canelo out-jabbing Chavez here in the first round thus far. Very good start here in the opening round for Canelo as he lands a hard right over the top within the final 30 seconds.
Score:Ā 10-9, Canelo
Round 2
They hit the center of the ring once again and Chavez comes with some jab attempts. Following that sequence from Chavez, Canelo lands some nice power punches in the center of the ring as he starts to get the wear down routine in. Chavez then lands a left hook, which ends up getting Canelo against the ropes, but Canelo gets out. Back in the center of the ring, Canelo goes back to landing a few jabs. Canelo doing everything he can to keep this fight in the center of the ring where Chavez has no clue how to approach this fight. Continuously, Chavez is letting Canelo land some hard jabs.
Scorecard:Ā 10-9, Canelo
Round 3
Canelo goes right back to the jab attempts in the center of the ring, which is obviously working. He lands two to the head quick, then one to the body. Midway through round 3, Canelo lands another jab followed by a hard left hook. A welt is starting to form on Chavezās left eye, so Canelo should be going right to work on that. Chavez gets Canelo to the ropes once again, where he wants him, and gets in some hard shots. He needed those. Better round for Julio, but still a Canelo round.
Scorecard:Ā Canelo, 10-9
Round 4
Canelo immediately starts the round with a hard right hook to the face of Chavez. Chavez is dancing around the ring at this point, but Canelo isnāt phased one bit, keeps chasing and lands the jabs. In the center of the ring, Canelo lands a left hook to the body and then a hard uppercut. This fight is a complete and utter mismatch thus far.
Scorecard:Ā Canelo, 10-9
Round 5
Chavez starts by circling the outside of the ring, but yeah, thatās not working well at all. Canelo lands a few more jabs and he might just be having some fun now. Canelo lands a huge right hand that somehow doesnāt knock Chavez to the canvas. At about 1:30 in, Canelo lands another stiff right hand to the face followed by two jabs. Score another for Mr. Alvarez.
Scorecard:Ā 10-9, Canelo
Round 6
Once again, Canelo starts the round by landing two big power punches. Julio just looks like a defeated man at this point, biding his time. Weāre told in this round that referee Kenny Bayless has told the Chavez corner that he better start seeing something. This could be stopped before we know it. Chavez gets Canelo back up against the ropes again, and he lands a few shots, but it looks like Canelo might be trying to bait him into something. They eventually return to the center of the ring. With the round coming to a close, Canelo lands a solid left.
Scorecard:Ā 10-9, Canelo
Round 7
Back to the center of the ring, Canelo lands two more jabs, then he comes with a flurry. Chavez then shows some signs of life as he gets some shots in against the ropes, but Canelo once again fights his way out with some power punches. Canelo comes with some more hard shots in the center of the ring. Chavez really needs to get out of the center of the ring in these later rounds or heās going down soon. Not that much action, but yes, another round for Canelo.
Scorecard:Ā 10-9, Canelo
Round 8
Canelo starts the round with a left jab to the face that connects. Chavez continues to dance around the outside of the ring but Canelo keeps connecting. The left eye of Chavez is really starting to swell now as the fight goes on. Another round of Canelo just having his way with Chavez, which has been the story of this whole fight. Chavez is a human punching bag.
Scorecard:Ā 10-9, Canelo
Round 9
And yet again, Canelo starts with a hard left jab to the head. Thatās followed up with two really stiff jabs to the dome, and you really have to wonder how heās taking this kinda punishment this late in the fight, as well as how much more he really can take. Chavez hit some shots with Canelo against the rope, but Canelo got out of it yet again to take things back to the center of the ring. Another stiff left jab to the face from Canelo, then they get back to the ropes. Canelo is clearly looking to bait him into an uppercut.
Scorecard:Ā 10-9, Canelo
Round 10
Chavez starts out the round dancing the outside of the ring again before they get back to the center. Canelo lands another combination to the body, something heās done far too often in this fight. In the center of the ring, Canelo lands a vicious uppercut that somehow Chavez eats. The action died down in this round, but itās still another round for Canelo.
Scorecard:Ā 10-9, Canelo
Round 11
Canelo comes out aggressive in this round, maybe looking to just end this. Chavez dances around a bit more, but all heās doing now is trying to survive the rest of the way. Canelo still getting his shots in. Now, the fans, displeased with what weāre all seeing, are booing ā and rightfully so. Another round, another shot fest for Canelo.
Scorecard:Ā 10-9, Canelo
Round 12
They touch gloves to begin the final round, then Canelo starts with the power shots once again. He lands yet another uppercut in the center of the ring, then chases Chavez around the ring once again landing punches. The fight ends with Chavez dancing.
This bout was about as big of a mismatch as we could have asked for. Just utter domination from Canelo.
