Jay Culter thinks the Bears should red-shirt Mitchell Trubisky if the team gets off to a poor start.
Former Bears quarterback Jay Cutler offered Chicago words of wisdom in regards to dealing with their new rookie signal caller. Cutler, the newest Fox broadcaster, said in a recent interview that he believes Chicago should take their time inserting Mitchell Trubisky into the starting lineup.
"“If it’s going downhill, there is no way I’m playing him,” Cutler said on ESPN 1000’s Waddle and Silvy Show. “For what? So he can go out there and take a beating and get off to a rough start as an NFL quarterback?”"
Cutler does have a point. The Bears roster is porous, to say the least. The Bears bookend tackle duo of Charles Leno Jr. and Bobby Massie allowed 73 total quarterback pressures in 2016. Chicago also has a lack of viable receiving options. With Alshon Jeffery departing town this offseason, Chicago will have to rely on Cameron Meridith, Markus Wheaton, Kendall Wright and Kevin White at wide receiver this season.
Mike Glennon will likely get the nod at quarterback to start the season. Glennon came to Chicago this offseason after signing a three-year deal worth $45 million. Despite the high price tag, Glennon is a bit of an unknown product after he spent most of the past four years as the backup quarterback in Tampa Bay. If Glennon does struggle early, Bears fans could be yearning for Trubisky to take the reigns. Cutler urges fans not to get impatient as there is no reason to throw him out there in a losing environment.

“I don’t think any of us will know where the Bears are until we see four, five or six games and kind of feel out how the season is going to go,” Cutler said. “If it’s going downhill, I really don’t see any reason to play the kid. I’m sure there’s going to be a lot of people calling for his name because you draft him at No. 2 and you draft him for a reason and that’s to play football and win games.”
