Washington Wizards forward Kelly Oubre has been suspended by the NBA. He will miss Game 4 against the Celtics.

Bad blood is starting to boil between the Celtics and Wizards. After what has been a scrappy matchup for much of the season, the Wizards will be missing a key bench piece for their upcoming playoff game. Kelly Oubre has been suspended by the NBA after he charged Celtics big man Kelly Olynyk in Game 3.

Adrian Wojnarowski of the Vertical was the first to report the news:

Oubre, 21, is a former first round pick in 2015 out of Kansas. Oubre has been an important piece off the bench for the Wizards as the team was 9.10 points better per 100 possessions with him on the court during the regular season. He is averaging 6.3 points per game so far during the Wizards postseason run.

The reason for his suspension came on this play. As you can see, Kelly Olynyk set a hard screen on Oubre that resulted in an offensive foul. Rather than taking the ball the other way, Oubre charged at Olynyk. In fairness, it’s hard to blame Oubre for his actions as Olynyk is well known for as a dirty player. Olynyk was the one who dislocated Kevin Love’s shoulder in 2015.

The loss of Kelly Oubre hurts the Wizards more than you might think given he’s a bench player. Boston has a much deeper bench and has already been outplaying Washington’s second unit. Unproven players such as Tomas Satoransky or Sheldon McClellan will likely get an extended look because of the suspension. The loss of Oubre also takes away another key defender in an attempt to guard scrappy 5-foot-9 scoring machine Isaiah Thomas.

With Game 4 on the horizon, the Celtics currently lead the series 2-1. Washington will have home court in an effort to even up the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals.
