Kentucky Derby 2017: What did Trifecta pay out?
The 2017 Kentucky Derby was run on Saturday, May 6 from a muddy Churchill Downs, but what did the winning trifecta pay out to bettors?
When it comes to the 2017 Kentucky Derby — or any horse racing event for that matter — there’s one thing that everyone associates with it. No, it isn’t a thrilling two-minute run or even the adult beverages. The greatest past time when it comes to horse racing is, of course, betting on horse racing. There’s no thrill like hitting a trifecta, superfecta and so on.
The interesting thing about wagering on the Kentucky Derby and horse racing is that there is always a bit of luck involved. You can look at track conditions, history and so on, but you can only know so much when they take their post. There’s so much variance, which is part of the thrill of it. Leading up to the 2017 Kentucky Derby, though, that was more so the case than ever.
With rain having poured down at Churchill Downs over several days, the muddy track conditions created an obstacle that these horses were unfamiliar with. Many of them had never run a race in the mud before in their careers. It was a tight race before that, but that evened the field even more so. That’s why we saw the favorites shift so often leading up to post time.
As a result, though, it made it near impossible to pick a winner — much less to pick something as impressive as a trifecta. So then, what was the payout for hitting a trifecta at the 2017 Kentucky Derby:
Per the NBC broadcast, the winning 5-1-11 $1 Trifecta paid out $8,297.20.

Frankly, given the betting conditions on Saturday at the 2017 Kentucky Derby, even that big payout seems low. However, I’m sure those who put down big money, or any money at all, won’t be complaining as they made out quite alright with that win on Saturday.
