John Gibson’s night is off to a terrible start, as he allowed three early goals to the Edmonton Oilers in Game 6.

Going into Game 6, the Edmonton Oilers desired nothing more than a strong start. Especially after they blew a three goal lead to the Anaheim Ducks in Game 5. Thanks to a meltdown by goaltender John Gibson, the Oilers have a 3-0 lead over Anaheim.

Leon Draisaitl got two early goals and it’s safe to say the Ducks goalie would love to have all two of them back. Zack Kassian’s third goal on a breakaway took Gibson out of the game. Backup goaltender Jonathan Bernier replaced him.

Gibson is a very talented goalie, but inconsistency has haunted him. He’s been prone to very soft goals in his career. Gibson also doesn’t have the best track record in the postseason, as Bruce Boudreau constantly went Frederik Andersen or Jonas Hiller over him. Perhaps this is why.

The Oilers got the strong start they needed. And it’s hard to deny Gibson’s meltdown didn’t play a huge part in it.

There’s still a lot of time left in the game, but the Oilers seem committed to refusing to end their season at home. Should Edmonton hold onto their lead, they will return to Anaheim for Game 7. Gibson will hopefully have a better performance, if he is even granted the opportunity to start. This could go down as one of the biggest postseason meltdowns in NHL history.

Bernier didn’t have much better luck, as the Oilers made it 4-0 shortly after he replaced Gibson. It appears that there will be a Game 7, which would be the first of the 2017 NHL playoffs.
