Kyle Schwarber makes diving catch into Wrigley Field stands (Video)

Kyle Schwarber turned into a gymnast by tumbling into the bleachers at Wrigley during a game against the Yankees.

However, the hulkish slugger raced in from left-center toward the foul line where he leaped into the seats to make the catch. There was a brief moment of hesitation to see if he made the catch and most importantly, he was okay.

Schwarber covered a lot of ground to record the out, the second of the inning to preserve a 4-4 game, at Wrigley Field. You can check out the catch in gif form below.

In his first full season in the big leagues, Schwarber was a World Series hero last year when he returned for Game 1 after tearing his ACL in the second game of the season against the Diamondbacks. His hit to leadoff the 10th inning in Game 7 after the 17-minute rain delay sparked the game-winning rally.

Maybe this catch by Schwarber will spark him at the plate. He’s hitting .193 on the season with five homers and 13 RBI for the 16-14 Cubs. His 39 strikeouts in 109 at bats is concerning for Joe Maddon’s leadoff hitter. How many times do you see a guy make a great play in the field come up with a big hit later? Could Schwarber be the Cubs extra-inning hero? Can he get out of this slump without Maddon dropping him in the order or does that need to happen to get out of the funk?

For the next week, the Cubs have a road trip to Colorado and St. Louis. After that six-game trip, they’ll head back to the friendly confines where they’ll see Cincinnati, who is tied with the Cubs at the top of the NL Central.
