The Stars acquired goaltender Ben Bishop in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings, who just traded for the goalie themselves a few months ago.

After completing a trade just two and a half months ago for the goalie, the Los Angeles Kings parted ways with Ben Bishop, as they shipped the netminder to the Dallas Stars.

Bishop was acquired in a deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning back in late February in a move that the Kings made to help lessen the load on injury-plagued goalie Jonathan Quick.

The deal was announced on the Stars’ Twitter account late Tuesday afternoon, and the team confirmed the deal was made for a fourth round pick in the 2017 NHL Draft.

The original deal for Bishop was made for Eric Cernak, goalie Peter Budaj and two late-round picks in the 2017 draft. The Kings received Bishop and a fifth round pick in the draft from the Lightning.

Bishop brings a load of accolades and talent to the Stars net as a Vezina finalist last season, as well as a career record of 270-148-80. Dallas marks the fifth stop for the 30-year-old goalie, with stints with the St. Louis Blues, Ottawa Senators, Lightning and Kings as his previous four homes.

Bishop is due to be an unrestricted free agent this summer, so the Stars must feel very confident in their ability to resign the goalie at some point shortly or ship him off again to somewhere that the goalie wants to sign.

The move may seem strange for the Stars, who already have goalies Kari Lehtonen and Antti Niemi locked down under contract for the next season for around $5 million each. The team must have a plan in place as they look to sign the goalie to a long-term deal, as they can’t have all three goalies on the roster for those deals.
