Don Mattingly was a pretty cool customer during his playing days, but he’s showing zero chill as of late as a manager.

In the bottom of the first inning Tuesday night, Don Mattingly was ejected for the second night in a row for arguing balls and strikes. Christian Yelich was also ejected for arguing balls and strikes on the same play, which saw him called out on strikes on a curveball by Adam Wainwright that was well off the plate.

Yelich was not happy with home plate umpire Andy Fletcher’s call that resulted in strike three, and he stood by home plate for several seconds to let Fletcher know he was unhappy with the call. After having his say at home plate, he walked back to the dugout still voicing his displeasure. Once he got inside the dugout, he was tossed by Fletcher.

Immediately after Fletcher’s decision, Mattingly ran out of the dugout to argue with Fletcher himself. Mattingly was quickly ejected by Fletcher as well, which left Marlins bench coach Tim Wallach in charge for the second straight night. That’s two nights in a row the Marlins have had an issue with balls and strikes.

The Marlins have been struggling lately, going 3-7 in their last 10 games and dropping 10 of their past 13. Not only that, but they have dealt with injuries to two key position players. Martin Prado and Miguel Rojas were both injured over the weekend and will require DL stints.

On top of that, their starting pitching rotation, which has already endured its share of struggles on the year, has sustained two injuries with both Wei-Yin Chen and Edinson Volquez landing on the DL as well. With the struggles on the field on top of multiple key injuries, it appears this could be taking a toll on Mattingly and the team’s overall mood.
