Texans rumors: Tom Savage will be starting quarterback
By Bryan Holmes
Despite taking Deshaun Watson 12th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft, rumors are that Tom Savage will start the season at quarterback for the Texans.
While most believe that Deshaun Watson is the quarterback of the future in Houston, it is rumored that he is not going to be the quarterback of the present going into the season.
According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle there is no quarterback competition going into the season between Watson and Tom Savage.
"“I guarantee you that barring injury, Tom Savage is the opening day starter against Jacksonville at NRG Stadium. Deshaun Watson will watch and learn. And there are only two ways he will get on the field anytime soon. And that is like Dak Prescott. If the first two go down for the season. Or if the first two play really really bad. He will not be rushed into Bill O’Brien’s system.”"
Deshaun Watson was drafted 12th-overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. During his tenure at Clemson, he led the school to a pair of National Championship games and one title.
The thing that set Watson apart from all the other quarterbacks in this draft was his track record of playing well in big games. Watson was phenomenal against the Alabama Crimson Tide twice in those situations, including a game-winning fourth quarter drive. Meanwhile, the other quarterbacks that are on the Texans roster are aggressively average at best.
If Watson gives the Texans the best chance to win a football game, they have to put him on the field. No matter how old he is. Savage is not the answer at quarterback for the Texans…even for one season…or one week. The Texans are a legitimate contender with a competent quarterback. If Watson shows real promise than they have to play him. Anything other than that would be selling themselves short.

I don’t buy for a second that this isn’t a quarterback competition going into the season.
