Injury update: Jeurys Familia has blood clot in shoulder

New York Mets closer Jeurys Familia has been diagnosed with an arterial clot in his right shoulder. He is on his way to St. Louis to receive further tests.
The Mets’ injury woes have yet to come to a halt, with Jeurys Familia becoming the latest casualty. Familia has been diagnosed with an arterial clot in his right shoulder, and he is currently on his way to St. Louis for further testing according to Mets beat writer, Anthony DiComo.
This comes as a bit of a surprise, as Familia has not indicated he had any discomfort in his arm this season. Although he had not been particularly sharp this season, his velocity has reportedly been fine, and he converted three save opportunities since he returned from his early season suspension.
With an injury this severe, there is always the possibility that he may require surgery. Surgery would give his rest of season outlook a gloomy look, especially since it is the shoulder of his throwing arm.

Familia has been one of baseball’s best closers over the last two seasons. He posted 43 saves on a 1.85 ERA in 2015, and 51 saves on a 2.55 ERA in 2016. Although his start this season wasn’t up to his standards, his track record suggested he would get back on track. It is a tough blow to the Mets bullpen.
Fortunately for the Mets they have a respectable replacement in Addison Reed. Reed has plenty of closing experience, and he was the interim closer for the team when Familia was suspended earlier in the season. Reed has converted 4 save opportunities so far this season, while posting a 3.00 ERA.
