Canadian defenseman Tyson Barrie will miss the remainder of the IIHF World Championship with a leg laceration.

Tyson Barrie has been having a stellar tournament thus far for Canada, but it seems his run is over sooner than intended. Barrie will miss the remainder of the tournament for Canada after suffering a leg laceration.

The weird thing about the injury is that Barrie didn’t suffer the injury while playing hockey. According to TSN’s Darren Dreger, Barrie suffered the injury while wrestling with a teammate in their hotel room.

The injury doesn’t seem to be too serious, but for the sake of safety they are ending Barrie’s tournament. This will be disappointing news for Colorado Avalanche fans who were hoping to see more of their star defenseman at the IIHF World Championship.

Barrie was having a very solid tournament for Team Canada, with two goals and five assists through three games. Barrie’s seven points were good for first among all defenseman at the tournament, seventh among all skaters, and good for third on Team Canada, trailing only Jeff Skinner (three goals, four assists) and Nathan MacKinnon (five goals, three assists).

Barrie was continuing his great playing form from the 2016-17 NHL season. While the Avalanche were arguably one of the worst teams in the modern era, Barrie was one of the few bright spots on an otherwise gloomy season. Barrie had seven goals and 31 assists on the season in 74 games for the Avalanche.

Despite this obviously big loss, Team Canada shouldn’t hang their heads too much. It was also announced today that St. Louis Blues defenseman Colton Parayko would be joining the team immediately. This will help lessen the blow that is the loss of Barrie for Team Canada moving forward.

Canada beat host nation France 3-2 today, and their next game is on Monday, May 15th, against
Norway.
