Manchester City beat Leicester 2-1 in the Premier League on Saturday, May 13. Here are all the highlights from the match.
Manchester City were looking to take another big step toward a top-four finish against Leicester at the Etihad on Saturday. Pep Guardiola’s side, predictably, dominated possession, but struggled to break down a stubborn Foxes backline.
The breakthrough came in the 29th minute, thanks to a slightly controversial refereeing decision. David Silva scored the goal, converting a Leroy Sane cross from inside the box, but Leicester’s players were rightly suspicious of Raheem Sterling’s involvement. The winger swung a leg at Silva’s shot while in an offside position, and probably should have been flagged, even if Silva likely would have scored without him.
City made it two in the 35th minute, thanks to a much less controversial refereeing decision. Sane was the creator again, when he got brought down by Yohan Benalouane in the box. It was a clear penalty, which Gabriel Jesus scored low to Kasper Schmeichel’s right.
Leicester had struggled to establish any foothold in the game for most of the first half, and were playing about as disinterestedly as you’d expect a team with nothing to play for to play. But they found a way back into the game just before half time anyway, when Shinji Okazaki converted Marc Albrighton’s cross with a powerful volley.
The goal spurred the Foxes on to a much more assertive second half performance. They stifled the Citizens, and produced the best chance of the half when Riyad Mahrez was fouled by Gael Clichy to win his side a penalty.
While there was no question it was a foul by Clichy, it did appear to be outside the box. The spot kick itself was even more controversial, as Mahrez converted, after slipping during his run up, into the top left corner. The goal was disallowed, however, as Bobby Madley correctly deemed Mahrez to have touched the ball twice as he kicked it.
