Some athletes and organizations showed some Twitter support for Derek Jeter on Jeter Night.
As one idiom goes, respect is earned, not given. And in Derek Jeter’s case, he earned the respect of not just New York, but of the entire MLB and then some. He would become one of the greatest shortstops in league history and the city of New York wanted to acknowledge that tonight before their game against the Houston Astros.
As the festivities carried on at Yankee Stadium, Twitter, too, would recognize the legend that is Derek Jeter. After all, it’s hard to stop measuring the love for Jeter at just New York. He’s a universal spokesman for baseball – whether he knows it or not. He’s an international icon for how he played the game with skill and an enviable sense of passion. Much like the admiration he received at Yankee Stadium, Jeter also got the attention from Twitter fans during Jeter Night.
Congrats to the greatest representative the @Yankees have ever had!! Derek Jeter is the epitome of what a Yankee should be. #JeterNight

This Derek Jeter day is AWESOME! Proves that you don't have to be that "Rah-Rah" guy to be a leader. My dude!! Well deserved honor.

The Mets should've bought Matt Harvey a ticket to see what a pro looks like #JeterNight

Only one could dream of the life that blessed Derek Jeter. The numbers he registered during his MLB career will always serve as friendly reminders of how iconic he is. Not even the endless amount of murals around Yankee Stadium can sum up how important of a role Jeter played. Now, he’ll have an opportunity to contribute to baseball under another light, if he chooses to. If he steps away from it altogether, then he at least has his wife and soon-to-be kid to look forward to.
Even if you’re a longtime fan and native of Boston-area sports, it’s still difficult to not give Derek Jeter some credit. Only Yankee Stadium can stomach all-time greats, such as Jeter. He’s the best ball player to ever wear No. 2, in not just pinstripes, but of all major league sports. He deserves the ceremony he received tonight, along with the standing ovation he got from those on Twitter.
