The New York Yankees honored Derek Jeter on Sunday evening by retiring his famed No. 2 jersey, and the legendary shortstop delivered a fantastic speech
Listing off the greats in the history of the New York Yankees might take an entire 24-hour day. However, there’s no denying that one of the greats of the game just recently left. Donning the famed No. 2 in pinstripes for his entire career, Derek Jeter is no longer taking the field for the Yankees — at least on a regular basis.
On Sunday evening, though, the Yankees brought him on the field once more, this time with all the bells and whistles. The occasion, of course, was to retire said famed No. 2 jersey and to have a night honoring one of the greatest Yankees (and baseball players) to ever play the game.
For Yankees fans, there were a number of moving moments throughout the ceremony. Seeing the jersey itself be retired was something special. What’s more, so was seeing all of the respect that he garners from fellow greats in the history of the pinstripes. Here’s what Derek Jeter had to say during his speech in front of the New York faithful:
Though it’s a cliche thing for something like this, you almost believe Jeter when he talks about not trading places with anyone. He was the embodiment of the Yankees for so long. And it only stands to reason that doesn’t leave him as he leaves the game.

Divulging in arguments of the greatest Yankees ever will never really get anywhere of consequence. What we can say definitively, though, is that Derek Jeter is in the conversation. For an organization with the storied history of the Yanks, that speaks volumes.
