OAKLAND, CA - APRIL 22: Robinson Cano

After missing three straight games, the Seattle Mariners placed second baseman Robinson Cano on the 10-day disabled list.

According to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times, Robinson Cano is going to the disabled list because of a strained quad. The stay is retroactive to three days ago when Cano missed the first game in a string of three.

In a corresponding move, Boog Powell has been called up from Triple-A Tacoma. Powell was acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2015. Powell is a career .300 hitter in the minor leagues with three different organizations. However, Taylor Motter will likely be filling most of Cano’s playing time. Motter has been a pleasant surprise, hitting five home runs since the season began.

Cano has been a bright spot through the early part of the season in an otherwise low wattage Mariners offense. Prior to the injury, Cano hit eight home runs with 28 RBI. His batting average is .296.

Cano being sent to the disabled list is just one instance in a string of frustrating injuries for the Mariners. Most of the starting pitching rotation, including Felix Hernandez and James Paxton, is currently on the DL. Mitch Haniger, the team leader in runs scored before falling to injury, has been on the DL since April 26. Jean Segura, the best hitter in the American League in terms of average, spent 12 games with a hamstring injury in mid April.

In addition, Mariners manager Scott Servais announced that Edwin Diaz won’t be closing for the time being. On Monday, he walked multiple batters in a row before being taken out of the game.

The Seattle Mariners came into this season with high expectations, but nothing can quite go their way as of late. As of Tuesday, the Mariners are nine games behind the Houston Astros, who have the best record in baseball.
