Julio Teheran beans Jose Bautista in first at-bat (Video)
By David Rouben
It didn’t take long for the Atlanta Braves to throw behind Jose Bautista, as Julio Teheran got to the Toronto Blue Jays’ outfielder in the first inning.
It must be 1992 all over again, because the Toronto Blue Jays and Atlanta Braves hate each other. In what has been a heated four-game series that has seen injuries, bench-clearing brawls, and homophobic slurs, everyone was curious to see what these two teams would get into in their final meeting of the season.
The Braves may have won every game of this series so far, but the one thing everyone will remember is Kevin Pillar’s controversial remarks to Jason Motte, which resulted in a two-game suspension. But Braves fans took great exception to Jose Bautista’s antics last game, as well.
With his team already down 8-3, Bautista hit a solo home run and admired it by flipping his bat, much like he did in the 2015 ALDS. However, hitting a series-clinching home run in the playoffs is much different than cutting the lead to four in a regular season game in May. He was booed heavily as he rounded home plate, and a confrontation with Kurt Suzuki resulted in a second bench-clearing brawl.
Bautista is already a very polarizing player, and doing that didn’t win him any new fans. Anyone who questioned whether Julio Teheran would throw behind him in the series finale got that answered in just the first inning:
It didn’t result in anything beyond that, as the two sides were issued warnings before they could clear the benches. MLB officials were already on high alert prior to this game, and likely made an extra effort to ensure an Odor-Bautista fight wouldn’t suddenly break out.
It may seem harsh for the Braves to start doing this so early, their opponent has done much worse. Over the course of four games, Blue Jays pitchers have hit Braves players seven times. The worst case was seeing Freddie Freeman get drilled in the wrist, leaving him out of action for 10 weeks. However, being hell bent on revenge hasn’t done the Braves much good, as Darrell Ceciliani has driven in three of the Blue Jays’ six runs. Perhaps they’re better off without Pillar.

Even though Bautista is a hero in Toronto for what he has done over the course of 10 seasons, his antics against the Orioles, Rangers, Royals, and now Braves has made him a hated figure outside of Canada.
