For the last dose of new Supernatural episodes before the fall, The CW has decided to air two full hours of the show to bring season 12 to a close.
With Riverdale airing an absolutely bonkers season 1 finale last week, the coast is clear for Supernatural to take over The CW tonight with two whole episodes, including the season 12 finale.
Let’s get right to the episode airing in the regular time slot of 8 p.m. ET. TVGuide has the synopsis for “Who We Are”:
"“Sam and Dean get caught in a dangerous situation and only have each other to rely on. Meanwhile, the fight between the American Hunters and the British Hunters comes to a head.”"
Just judging by the TVGuide information for “All Along the Watchtower,” the actual season finale, it looks like the American/British battle will basically be resolved either at the end of “Who We Are” or by the start of the next episode:
"“Season 12 end [sic] with Lucifer battling Sam, Dean and Castiel for control of his unborn child.”"
While “Who We Are” doesn’t refer to anything in particular (except, maybe, Dean and Sam reaffirming their identities as different hunters than the British Men of Letters), “All Along the Watchtower” does. It’s a Bob Dylan song that also has a version performed by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Interestingly, there’s a lyric about not being able to get any “relief,” which really kind of applies to the Winchester brothers after 12 seasons of handling shenanigans. It does also just sound cool, admittedly.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Andrew Dabb, the showrunner of Supernatural, said that “certain plot lines will be ended this season,” which seems to support the British Men of Letters getting the boot theory we just posited above.
