15 pro wrestling bookings that went horribly wrong
6. Team WWE defeats the Nexus; SummerSlam 2010
Just like “The Invasion” was a missed opportunity for WWE back in 2001, the invasion of the Nexus was a badly missed chance for WWE to establish some stars after their time in NXT before NXT truly became a brand.
Former NXT participants Wade Barrett, Justin Gabriel, Heath Slater, Skip Sheffield (Ryback), Michael Tarver, Daniel Bryan and David Otunga took control of RAW in one of the more intense segments in RAW history.
This was memorable for a few reasons: Daniel Bryan was fired because of choking out ringside announcer Justin Roberts with his own tie and the Nexus beat the holy bejesus out of John Cena and tore the ringside area apart. They had truly arrived that night.
So of course, leave it to John Cena (and Team WWE) to end the Nexus’ momentum at SummerSlam in 2010 in a seven-on-seven elimination match that saw Daniel Bryan return as the seventh member of Team WWE with The Miz being teased as the seventh member throughout the night to join Cena, Edge, Chris Jericho, Bret Hart, R-Truth and John Morrison in the main event.
Sure, there came John Cena being fired and joining the Nexus or whatever, but this match really killed anything the Nexus had going after their impactful debut. They weren’t taken as seriously as they were when they made their debut before the SummerSlam loss and the stuff that happened after the loss just felt rather pointless.
