Chris Jericho said during a recent radio appearance that he was supposed to become the top champion of RAW at WrestleMania 33
Chris Jericho’s latest run in WWE, which recently came to an end so he could go tour with his band Fozzy, was maybe one of the best of his entire career. Given how legendary of a career he already had up to that point, that’s really saying something, but many believe it to be true. However, could it have been even better with a big win at WrestleMania 33?
Apparently, that was almost the case. Jericho recently appeared on an edition of Sirius XM’s Busted Open Radio (h/t WrestleZone for the transcription), and during that appearance he revealed that the original plans for him in Orlando were to walk out of Camping Wold Stadium as the WWE Universal Champion. From there, he was scheduled to drop the belt to Brock Lesnar shortly thereafter at Payback, still carrying through with the plans for the Beast Incarnate to be the top guy on RAW this summer and for Jericho to take his latest break.
Furthermore, Jericho also revealed that when the plans were scrapped, he pitched a match with Shinsuke Nakamura at the biggest show of the year, and yes, we’re all angry that apparently WWE turned down what would have probably been a ‘Mania match for the ages.

Going back to the Universal title angle, though, you’d imagine Jericho would have went through with his feud with Kevin Owens, taking the belt from his former best friend. But, where would that have put Goldberg in all of this? Was Goldberg not always scheduled for a title run to eventually give Brock his win back? Was it just supposed to be Brock vs. Goldberg at ‘Mania with no prize on the line, just the story of Brock not being able to overcome him to that point in his career?
Either way, if this was the original plan for some time, then the recent, amazing run that Chris Jericho was on could have gone down in history as being even better with him adding another world title win to his legacy.
We still have The List, though, so not all is lost.
