Scott Satterfield is a rising star in college football coaching circles, and Appalachian State has taken a step toward keeping him around.

In the last three seasons under Scott Satterfield, Appalachian State has won at least seven games with no worse than a third-place finish in the Sun Belt Conference. Back-to-back double-digit win campaigns, with a bowl victory to end each, has brought a seamless transition from the FCS level.

Satterfield qualifies as an “Appalachian State guy,” he played quarterback at the school in the early ’90s and has spent the majority of his coaching career there. From 1998 to the present, Satterfield has only spent three seasons not coaching at his alma mater, serving as quarterbacks coach at Toledo in 2009 and offensive coordinator at FIU in 2010 and 2011.

According to College Football Talk, Appalachian State has rewarded Satterfield with a contract extension through the 2021 season. Director of Athletics Doug Gillin offered a statement on the matter, with great praise for Satterfield.

"“Scott Satterfield continues to take App State football to new heights,” Director of Athletics Doug Gillin said. “In four seasons at App State, he has orchestrated one of the most successful transitions to FBS football and continues to build App State football for long-term sustainable success on a national level. Under Scott’s leadership, our football program is 27-5 over the last 32 games, which ranks among the nation’s best."

"“As strong as Scott’s on-field success has been at App, he also continues to raise the bar for our football program’s performance in the classroom and its involvement in the community,” Gillin continued. “Our last two football recruiting classes have averaged a 3.5 GPA, and we just achieved our highest fall semester GPA under Scott’s leadership. Scott is truly building our program the right way.”"

Appalachian State finished 10th in the country in rushing offense last season (250.9 yards per game, immediately ahead of Ohio State and Alabama) and 52nd in total offense (429.9 yards per game). That kind of production, even considering a lower level of competition, will get a coach noticed.

Satterfield is sure to have Power 5 schools at his door before too long. And even with this contract extension, nothing will prevent him from making that jump if he wants to. But Appalachian State has made the only move it can, as a further show of loyalty to Satterfield, with a new contract and presumably a raise.
