Twin Peaks season premiere synopsis: The Return
By David Rouben
An amazing 25 years after the theatrical release of Fire Walk With Me, Twin Peaks returns for a de facto third season with a two-hour premiere on Showtime.
Even though Twin Peaks was a cultural phenomenon throughout much of the 90s, it couldn’t last for more than two seasons. After wrapping up the Laura Palmer arc, the show went downhill and ratings began to drop fairly quickly. However, people are still trying to figure out the meaning behind the Black Lodge scene all these years later. What we do know is that Bob has seemingly possessed Dale Cooper.
This iteration of Twin Peaks picks up 25 years after the end of the second season finale. It’s understandable to question why they waited so long to continue the show’s narrative, but in a way, it makes sense, considering Laura Palmer told Cooper “see you in 25 years.”
It may be hard for the show to recreate the magic the original series had, but the good news is that David Lynch will direct every episode. He directed all of the original series’ best episodes, including the pilot, the reveal of Laura Palmer’s killer and the last episode.
In addition to airing on Showtime, the two-part premiere will be screened at Cannes Film Festival. Here’s the synopsis for “The Return”, according to TV Guide:
"My log has a message for you; The stars turn and a time presents itself."
That is incredibly obscure, even for a show like Twin Peaks. They’ve done a great job of keeping details for this revival under wraps. They also know that, in the age of social media and Reddit, even the slightest detail will set off a frenzy of speculation. However, Dale Cooper figures to feature prominently in this episode as he returns to the town that changed his life.

The closest any show has come to Twin Peaks recently is the first season of True Detective. But while the original run was so revolutionary, it has the potential to be even bigger now in the age of social media.
