NFL allowing fans to bet at Raiders’ games in Vegas
By Brad Richter
Sports bettors rejoice as fans that attend Raiders’ home games in Las Vegas will be able to legally place bets on mobile devices while in the stadium… for now.
Nevada has allowed mobile sports betting for a few years now. People who are located anywhere within the state lines can place wagers on sporting events. The Nevada gaming officials expect the space inside the new Las Vegas Stadium to fall under those same provisions according to an ESPN report.
The new Las Vegas Stadium lease contains statements that prohibit “any Gaming or Gambling, the maintaining or operating of a Gaming Establishment and/or sports wagering or any wagering on racing or other non-sport events”. However, there is nothing in the lease that specifically prevents personal mobile devices from being used to place wagers on sporting events while in the stadium.

While Roger Goodell and the NFL have been firmly against legalizing sports betting on NFL games outside of Nevada, the move of the Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas seems to have the issue squarely in the crosshairs again.
NFL owners will meet in Chicago for spring meetings this week and are expected to vote on the Las Vegas Stadium lease. Even if they approve the lease this is unlikely the last we will hear on the issue with the Raiders move to Las Vegas still a couple years away.
The NFL will continue to meet over the next two years to establish league policy on sports betting within the Nevada. For now, Goodell has stated that he will not force Nevada sportsbooks to remove the Raiders from their action but the topic of mobile betting inside the stadium has not been addressed.
The only safe bet right now is that we will hear a lot more discussion on the NFL’s sports betting policy in Nevada between now and the first game in Las Vegas for the Raiders in 2020.
