NBA All-Time Mock Draft: Which NBA legends would get picked by teams right now?
By Ti Windisch
14. Miami — Hakeem Olajuwon
Pat Riley already has a center in Hassan Whiteside, but one of the NBA’s most proven winners isn’t going to let Hakeem Olajuwon slip through his fingers. Hakeem getting down to 14 never happens a decade ago, but things are different these days.
The Dream dominating his competition probably isn’t going to change a whole lot, though. Olajuwon averaged 22.5 points, 11.4 rebounds, 2.5 assists, 1.8 steals and 3.2 blocks per game in his 17 years with the Houston Rockets (we’re going to ignore that lone Toronto Raptors season here.)
Even in an NBA more focused on outside shooting, there’s always room for a player as dominant as Hakeem. Not many players affected both ends of the game as much as he did — in the 1989-90 season, Olajuwon led the league in both rebounds and blocks, while also averaging 24.3 points per game.
With The Don that is Pat Riley making moves to surround Hakeem with good players to maximize his skills, playing in Miami isn’t going to be an easy proposition for opposing teams. As if it ever was.
Hakeem and Hassan might not be able to play together against more modern offenses, but Olajuwon has found success playing with other traditional big men in the past, and Whiteside and The Dream would make one hell of a line of defense for other teams to have to get past.
