15. Portland — Julius Erving

The Portland Trail Blazers could use a skilled wing player. They’re getting one of the best ones from NBA — or ABA — history at 15 overall here, with the pick of Julius Erving. Better known as Dr. J, Erving had great stints both in the NBA and ABA over his 16-year career.

Dr. J averaged 24.2 points, 8.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 2.0 steals and 1.7 blocks per game across leagues. His ABA numbers inflate the totals, but even discounting the ABA years Erving averaged 22.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.5 blocks per game in his 11 seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA.

The Blazers would still be undersized, but being able to trot out Damian Lillard, C.J. McCollum and Julius Erving as starters from the one to the three means no defense is shutting down Portland’s offense. McCollum is an unbelievable third option, and the tag team of Dame and Dr. J is a frightening prospect to any defender.

The only real downside to Dr. J in 2017 is his lack of a 3-point shot. Erving only averaged one or more attempted 3s per game twice in his career, and he made just 29.8 percent of his 3s as an NBA/ABA player.

His lack of a 3-point stroke might’ve caused Dr. J to fall this low, but there’s no way Portland is passing on a player of his caliber who can play on the wings. With Dame and C.J., the Blazers have enough shooters to make up for the lack of a shot from The Doctor.
