20. Portland (From Memphis via Denver and Cleveland) — George Gervin

Portland had no idea having multiple decent picks in this draft would be such a good idea, but it’s really working out for the Trail Blazers. After adding Dr. J earlier, the Blazers now pick up the Iceman, George Gervin, with the 20th overall selection.

Iceman wasn’t much of an outside shooter, but the former San Antonio Spur found plenty of ways to get buckets without the t3-point shot. Gervin started his career with the Virginia Squires, then was traded to the San Antonio Spurs and stuck with the team as they transitioned from the ABA into the NBA.

In a surprising twist, Gervin really hit his stride during his NBA days. Iceman averaged 26.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.2 steals per game with the NBA version of the Spurs. Remarkably, he made 51.1 percent of his nearly 20 attempted shots per game.

Despite Gervin’s dominance, those Spurs were never able to get over the hump and win a title until Tim Duncan arrived around a decade and a half later. Iceman will get another shot at a ring in Portland though, especially considering the Blazers have another pick coming.

The fit isn’t fantastic for the Trail Blazers, but a lineup like Dame Lillard, C.J. McCollum, Dr. J, Iceman and Jusuf Nurkic is definitely interesting. The spacing should survive because of those two shooters in Dame and C.J., and those last three players are just matchup nightmares for most defenders.
