13. Terrell Owens waves the pom-poms

What’s the difference between a fan and a pom-pom waver anyway? The correlation is very strong between those two, but if anybody taught us the slight difference it was the one-of-a-kind football celebrator Terrell Owens.

Owens had Hall of Fame talent and frankly Hall of Fame numbers, but he did wear teammates out and never really stuck anywhere very long besides initially with the San Francisco 49ers. He first came on the scene from the Owens Catch from 49ers quarterback Steve Young. That probably remains Owens’ best play as a professional, but he’ll be better known for his unique twist on celebrating his many touchdowns.

Technically, standing on the Dallas Cowboys’ star in the middle of Cowboys Stadium was his defining NFL moment as he got tackled into the turf by an angry safety. However, not all of his celebrations were demeaning. That one time he just took some 49ers cheerleaders’ pom-poms were pretty awesome.

In that moment, Owens best encapsulated being a football fan, a football player and a cheerleader at the same time. Pom-poms semi-readily available for players to just grab them and have some fun. Not to say it was on par with Neil Armstrong walking on the moon in that New Mexico sound studio but yes, this was a very impactful moment in the NFL.
