In the wake of Roger Moore’s passing, Australian reporter James Wigney has looked at his legacy on the Bond franchise.  In his piece, “The Playful and Fun Roger Moore was the Most British of James Bonds — but Not One of the Best,” published through news.com.au, Wigney takes the opportunity to provide his own list of lists, worth attention for any Bond fan.

But first things first. Wigney’s reflection on Moore’s Bond films is earnest, if not right on the mark. Of Moore, he says,

"With that cut glass accent and his ever arched eyebrow, his James Bond was big on charm, and whether he was bedding beauties or saving the world from whichever supervillain’s dastardly plan, always gave the impression that he was having a jolly old time doing it."

In 2012, Wigney ranked the Bond performances and had Moore fifth, out of six, only ahead of George Lazenby (interesting to note that even an Aussie takes issue with Lazenby as Bond). But now, in retrospect, with Moore’s passing. it has given Wigney an opportunity to reconsider. And he has, to a degree. Wigney now has Moore placed fourth, and cites Moonraker as a primary reason why. Who can blame him? .

The article contains a reader poll: Who was the Best James Bond? As of this writing, Connery had the lead with 40% of the vote. Despite Wigney’s placement of him in the lower ranks, Aussie fans have Moore in 2nd place, with 28% of the vote.

But Wigney’s piece doesn’t end there. He has taken this opportunity, as we honor Roger Moore, to reflect further on the franchise and point out his own favorites. Want to know his thoughst on the “Best Baddies,” “Best Cars,” or “Best Gadgets”? Just take a look. Wigney also includes a list of the best Bond films, compiled by Aussie film critic Leigh Paatsch.

Commenting on others’ Bond commentaries is not a regular occurrence on this site, but sometimes (as in this case) there are exceptions.
