The Chicago Bulls are reportedly expecting Dwyane Wade to opt-in and return to the team next season.

Following a year of disappointment and distraction, most in the Chicago Bulls organization still believe that veteran guard Dwyane Wade will be with the team next season. Wade signed a two-year, $48 million deal in 2016 with a player option for the 2017-18 season. His decision will shape how the team does business this summer.

In a reader Q&A yesterday afternoon, the Chicago Tribune‘s K.C. Johnson reported that “most everyone associated with the Bulls believes Wade will pick up the option and remain in Chicago for another season”. It’s not difficult to imagine why. Wade will be almost 36 by the time next season starts, and he has $23.5 million reasons to stay with Chicago next season. He likely won’t find that kind of financial incentive anywhere else on the open market if he opts out.

The decision deadline for Wade’s opt-out is June 27, according to Johnson via the Vertical’s Bobby Marks. Even if he takes it to the wire, it will leave the Bulls with nearly a week before free agency begins on July 1st to sort out their cap situation and player board. After a first round loss and with several players hitting free agency, Chicago will be faced with several important decisions.

However, if the team can get Wade to buy into a supporting role, he could still provide tremendous value. The 11-time All-Star scored 18.3 points per game in 60 games last year. He is a smart offensive player who can carry the Bulls on that end when engaged and healthy. If they do return to the playoffs, Wade is also a player who tends to bring his best in the postseason.

Nikola Mirotic, Cristiano Felicio, Joffrey Laveurgne and most of the Bulls’ point guard rotation will also hit the market in July. However, Chicago has stayed mostly cap-flexible outside of big deals for Wade and Jimmy Butler. Regardless of the decision Wade makes, the team is well-suited to retain their own players and stay competitive.
