The Buffalo Sabres are going overseas to solve their blue line woes, signing KHL defenseman Victor Antipin to a one-year deal.

It’s not a secret the Buffalo Sabres are trying to fix their defense. While they have dynamic forwards like Jack Eichel, Evander Kane, Kyle Okposo and Ryan O’Reilly, their defensemen are holding the team back. New general manager Jason Botterill promised to address their defensive issues. He went a little bit off the board with his first move, signing KHL free agent defenseman Victor Antipin to a one-year entry level deal.

Because he’s a 24 year old, the NHL’s collective bargaining agreement only allows him to sign a one-year deal. Antipin will be a restricted free agent after this season. Nikita Zaitsev signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs and played a big role for them. The Sabres are hoping Antipin can do the same.

“Victor is a well-rounded defenseman who has played in all situations at the pro level,” Botterill said, via SabresPR. “His mobility and puck-moving skills make him a perfect match for what we’re hoping to build with our defense corps next season.”

Botterill talked about having a faster team in his introductory press conference. Antipin is someone who fits in with this strategy, as he moves the puck very efficiently and is an above average skater.

With Magnitogorsk Metallurg in 2016-17, Antipin set career highs with 18 assists and 24 points. He scored six goals as well. In 18 playoff games, Antipin added 11 points (four goals and seven assists). During the recent IIHF World Championships, he put up four assists in 10 games.

Antipin adds depth to the Sabres’ left side. This was sorely needed. And in a weak free agency class, taking a chance on Antipin is worthwhile. He has a different playing style than Zaitsev, who is more physical. However, Antipin should make an immediate impact on the Sabres.
